Problem:
MXenes are a class of 2D materials based on transition metal carbides or nitrides. MXenes are highly conductive and hydrophilic, but susceptible to oxidation. Oxidation decreases the conductivity of MXenes and limits their use in devices operating under ambient conditions.
Hypothesis:
Phosphonic acids can self assemble in monolayers on the surface of MXenes by reacting with terminal -OH groups. Not only could this reduce oxidation and improve solubility in organic solvents, but using phosphonic acids with electron donating or electron withdrawing groups may alter the workfunction.
